about this website
This website’s purpose is to emphasize and celebrate Hilton Head Island’s evolution as a place that protects its sensitive physical nature as seen in the photos, while also cultivating the characteristics that define its community nature, as you’ll read in the commentaries.
confessions
There are many great photographers around Hilton Head Island, but I am not among them. I’m not trying to showcase my photographic skills here, but rather to let my photos and words portray the essence of an exceptional place and a very livable, complete community.
cameras
My cameras are not expensive - a Nikon P900 point-and-shoot with a good zoom, and a Nikon Zfc mirrorless with 50-250 Nikkor lens. My iPhone 14 also creates surprisingly nice photos, and it’s always with me. It helps to have great scenes to shoot in the neighborhood.
about the photographer / writer
All the current photos and commentaries on this website are mine. From time to time, I may invite others to submit content. I will decide which submittals, if any, are appropriate to include. If I wanted to be part of an opinion free-for-all, I’d be on social media instead!
photo editing
I’m Jack Alderman - I arrived on Hilton Head Island in 1990 for my job as a corporate land manager and planner. Now in retirement, I am still involved in civic issues, particularly workforce housing. Besides photography, I enjoy golf, bicycling, Kenya missions, and family... and I love Hilton Head Island.
submittals
My photos are stored in Apple Photos on a Mac. Editing is completed via Apple Photos, Affinity, and/or Luminar. I also occasionally use Prisma software on an iPad for an artistic effect. However, I generally prefer minimal edits - cropping, straightening, and sharpening.
